Old Testament vs. New Testament by gblues 2003-01-04 18:30:46
The Old Testament is essentially a documentary. It begins with the establishment of a covenant between God and Abraham in Genesis, which is reaffirmed with each of the patriarchs (Genesis). It continues with the establishment of Israel (Exodus) and of the Law (Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy).

The rest is a combination of history, prophecy, poetry, and erotica. ;)

The New Testament is the establishment of a new covenant. The Old Covenant required Man to keep to a strict code, which of course he fail(ed|s) miserably trying to keep. The new covenant is salvation by faith, rather than by works.

The essense of the Old Testament law boils down to: "Love your neighbor as yourself" and "Love the Lord your God with all your body, mind, heart, soul, and strength." All the other laws are mere clarifications of these two laws.

The purpose of the covenant is for God to restore the relationship with Man that was destroyed in the Garden. The covenants are the same in purpose, but different in implementation.

Clear as mud? Good. :)
