I know a guy who does a complete check of every single bit of source code for any kind of problem before compiling and installing. And he doe it at install time too! He's never had a problem :) Of course, knowing how to program helps. I do compile most everything from source too, bt mainly so it's built exactly right for my setup and configuration :)
