I think I know what you mean. My first mother-in-law used to make things for us, things she expected to see on the walls when she came to visit. You know, macrame owls, crocheted stuff made with the plastic six-pack holders from soda pop. So we always scrambled around and hung them when we knew she was coming. She did make me one thing that was really cool though; she crocheted a Mr. Bill doll for me. "Noooo! I don't like knitting needles!"
