My two fave subjects. Bush and Religion! by Blackbyrd22006-11-19 12:55:59
  Y'know, I do NOT agree with Bush's quote, by adiplomat2002-12-27 21:31:34
    Atheism is not a religion. (n/t) by Blackbyrd22006-11-19 12:55:59

          Well, let's just walk down these points by adiplomat2002-12-27 23:30:04

Hehe.

No, I wouldn't want to be judged _solely_ by my parents views, attitudes, actions. My own actions and behaviors do not resemble theirs in any significant way. However, some of their traits have been passed on to me. This is the nature of child-rearing.

Bush Jr. has repeatedly duplicated the behavior of Bush Sr. Most especially when it comes to religion and religious intolerance. Thus, the history is relevant, if nothing more than as an indicator of attitude which should be watched for.

The relevance of the comment was made by your comment in the previous post about the AA's complaining about Bush Sr's failure to apologize, years after the fact. You said it was patently ridiculous, I was concurring, while noting that this fact does not mean that people and groups don't continue to do it, and that ridiculous as it may be, it can affect our lives for good or ill.

In regards to your equitable treatment of other religions;
Do you support 5 prayer times each day so the Moslems can pray while kneeling to Mecca as their religion requires?
What exactly is it that atheists do that you perceive as a threat? Other than engage in verbal debates about the existence of a God, I can't see that they spend any time 'forcing' others to conform to their beliefs. Unless of course, you feel that open discussion of belief systems is considered 'forcing' someone to conform. I do agree that certain people may be somewhat rabid in their refusal to conform to others religious beliefs, but I don't think most atheists say that someone else can not practice their beliefs, so long as they don't force the atheists to conform to that structure. Maybe you should give me an example so I better understand your position here.

In your last paragraph, I still must disagree. Having a fan site of Britney Spears does not constitute a religion. It constitutes nothing more sinister than poor taste, in my opinion. I don't think anyone considers a statue to Abraham Lincoln to be a particularly holy relic, and while President's day is a national holiday, it isn't considered a 'holy' day by anyone I know. Nobody prays to Martin Luther King, or JFK. (Nobody who has a fairly firm grip on reality anyway.) One can respect or admire someone without making a religion out of it.
