8MB or ram is going to give graphical installers some challenge. And with only 250MB of harddisk there is a limit to swap size too. I have done SuSE installs with floppy/network and those worked fine, but none of them had only 8MB of memory. It may work with the older SuSE 7.x releases and YaST1 installer (YaST2 has 48MB memory requirement IIRC).
SuSE Linux up until 8.0 where build for 386 compatibility. SuSE 8.1 will only run on 586 and up. I believe Mandrake too is optimized for pentium and higher cpus.
I'm sure you know that there is no chance of installing a KDE or Gnome desktop on that laptop.
