Are you ging to be able to do much in X?

Debian will have recommendations on their site -- I assume most others do too.

Also, check out the distros on Linux Distribution Watch

Peanut Linux, Vector Linux, and some others 9Knppix?) are supposed to be specifically geared to "tight" enviroments. I nnow there are more. Some are ($) free, some not

Some of the oneline Linux sites have articles and reviews, often compatring more than one "small" linux flavour. Check out Linux Planet, Linux Journal, Desktop Linux, and of course Google Linux Search.
