Lott was a staffer for Rep. William Colmer (D-Miss.), well known as a segregationist from way back; fought to keep his fraternity at Ole Miss segregated; has remained close to what remains of the White Citizens Council; addressed the Conservative Citizens Council (subject of condemnation legislation from the Congress); voted against MLK Day; supported Bob Jones University's attempts to maintain tax-exempt status after banning interracial dating. None of which by itself means much, but taken in aggregate lends weight to the charge of racist.
