          Really ? by yoyo2002-12-27 06:41:07
            It's actually true. by hazcat 2002-12-27 08:09:11
No U.S. plant currently produces weapons grade plutonium. Period. They were mothballed over 30 years ago. Indeed, much of our reactor fuel comes from abroad, too. (Lovely, eh?) What DOES happen is that old warheads are recycled and the fissionable materials are either stored for future 'reference' or used to produce newer weapons.

How do I know? One of those mothballed plants was in my area of responsibility a couple tours back. Security was a nightmare! Let alone the annual call from the little old lady who reported a leak at the facility every Spring... as soon as the nice bright green pollen coated her mud puddles.

Oh, and before any points it out - the only reason the U.S. stopped testing the darned things was because computers reached a point that actual tests were no longer necessary to predict weapons performance. So most of our current inventory is (you guessed it) 'virtually proven to work.'
