First it is "Lebensraum" - room/space to live in; ( "Liebensraum" would mean room/space to love in, perhaps some better idea).

And secondly it mostly means space which a people could inhabitat - not only to have much influence over it.

Thirdly I don't think, the UnitedStates want to increase their "Lebensraum", but I think they strongly want to increase their influence; which is just one part of the Konzept of the "Lebensraum".
