THese things have a limited write-cycle lifetime (which is why MS included the Enhanced Write Filter in XPembedded). I don't know if linux hits the drive as hard as windows does with it's registry writes and whatnot, but it's a fast way to kill the card. It's been known for CF cards to not live through the First Boot Agent process in XPembedded... about 30 minutes.
