First, it's not terror, it's terrorism. I'll grant that if you are foolish enough to listen only to the media, you would make such a sad mistake.
Second, "violence" is one of those words that really doesn't have a single definition, and you seem to want every use of the word to have only your intended meaning. That just isn't the case in the real world, Charlie Brown. This is the meaning that would be most likely to fit this discussion: "an act of aggression (as one against a person who resists)". It's doubtful, though, that we even use the term properly at all here.
Third, if something comes down to a choice between A and B, you can't say "I won't choose either" and avoid being an idiot. Sorry, but there's only two choices: A and B.
Finally, violence is not the "last" option in all confrontations. The only people who say that are philosophers who postulate that you can always reason with another (in other words, incompetent philosophers). Quite often the proactive use of controlled force against an aggressor will end the threat. As with any situation, though, you have to adjust your actions to match. If your personal philosophy is too inflexible, you will not be able to live with the rest of the world for very long. |
