          I'm using Slack8.1 as well, by caffine-iv 2002-12-27 05:31:07
and it's never crashed on me, no matter what a user did.

I've made it hang a few times during the configuration of X as root, but that doesn't count :) It wasn't really hung, I could still remotely use the box. But local console was done for.

As for security updates, my Slack8.1 CD had hte versions on it that everyone was saying we all need to upgrade to to get out of hte insecure stuff... Apart from Apache 1.3.27 anyways.

But it was Reiser that gave me the issue once. Power company has a habit of killing power once in a while (twice a month, is average) and when it went out once, Reiser borked. It was fine till the journalling system tried to fix stuff that wasn't broke and finished doing journaled commands that were never sent. Then it refused to boot.

ext3 has survived every single power outage, no problem.
