I am a ham operator.

Seems like the phrases "ham", "ham operator", "licenced Amateur Radio operstor", etc; bring a worse rap than "geek".

I got into ham radio because of packet. The ideas of wireless communication seemed fun, and because ham radio licences encaurage homebrewing, it could satisfy my hacker tendancies.

More geeks should get into it now with APRS and new satellites to play with.
For those that say "pfffffft", read this article from CNN about the most expensive ham licence ever issued.
Who does it belong to?
