It's actually a partition. windows won't distinguish between drives and partitions when dealing with the general My Computer junk. If you delv into a bit, you can figure out whats what, but really and truely... If you had say, 4 100GB drives, and each drive was partitions into 4 25GB partitions and all formatted, it would be a royal pain to figure out exactly what partition you were dealing with on which drive ;)
So you cna have C, D, and E all on one drive, and hte MBR is the system area on that drive.
