I'm not autistic but... by randomman 2002-12-02 00:01:54
I was tested more than once for it. They labelled me as ADD, not AD/HD which is similar but different. In this case it is definitly both a benefit and a detriment.

Ever have a day where you can name every item of clothing including details like brand worn by every person you glance at? Or maybe can make amazingly accurate logcial deductions and intuitive leaps? I have. On the reverse face of the coin though, I've had days where I can't give you my mother's name or tell you where the keys I set down literally less than 10 seconds ago are. Not to mention having to ask people to repeat themselves twenty times since I can't follow their speech for more than a few seconds before I lose focus.

There are a lot of other things, like scoring high on every type of intelligence test I've taken, but being so scatter-brained that it's difficult to apply such faculties to real-world applications.

I don't want to be intriniscally different from how I am, I just wish I could learn to direct my thoughts in a more focused fashion at will rather than at the whim of hard to fathom brain chemistry.
