For smaller documents with little formatting the filesizes are indeed smaller, but if you add images or lots of formatting, as the document gets larget rtf is infact larger than .doc, but the rtf's are much more compatable than the .doc's are. That, and they compress rather nicely because they're nothing but pure text (hence the larger filesizes sometimes)
