I really dislike the idea of ext3. They slapped a Journal on top of an existing filesystem (ext2). Reiser was built as a Journalling system from the ground up.

The last benchmark that I read (this was a while ago, however) put Reiser and XFS ahead of ext3 for speed. Reiser handles smaller files better than XFS but XFS wins with larger files.

There is also the nifty way that Reiser gets rid of "slack space". Any block that is partially used can still be used by other files as well.
