are women who have nowhere else to turn; women in different parts of Africa are forbidden by law at working any number of jobs (if they are any available) or even from working their own land. Some are women whose husbands, fathers, and brothers have been killed in wars or political coups. Some are forced into the business by the police themselves. Some are simply from the wrong background according to the current ruling party and have been driven from their homes.
