Does World AIDS Day tick off anyone else? by slayer2002-12-01 16:17:46
hmm no but a diffrent day somewhat does by Arienadean2002-12-01 19:27:23
Just to clarify... by slayer2002-12-01 19:33:49
well what they say by Arienadean 2002-12-01 20:33:06
is in one case vaccines in another lead blinds in another food additives or something and they are sueing the government or doctors for damages. Their is some cases where yes lead does something but it has to occur quite young and they aren't sure specifically it causes autism in that small group it does cause a variety of health issues. For the shots there is mercury in some that caused reaction in some children again a small group. I stopped having immunizations at 5 and the MMR shot(the one they question) didn't exist then. I also know kids that had a bad reaction to that shot(including my daughter) who never developed autism.

New studies are showing that something to do with brain development in either the fetal stage or within a few months of birth. The brain supposedly in autistics grows at a highly rapid rate then slows down to slower than normal development. In another study I saw the superior olive didn't develop in autistics. I know my brain structure was examined as a child and they found my chemistry off amoungst other things however I wasn't told whatelse they found from tests.(I believe it was a PET scan done on me along with numerous blood and urine workups but no genetics was done at the time)

Being a gift or a handicap is a matter of opinion as we are on a spectrum. Not all autistics are savants or genius. Some have normal iq's and some are "slow" to mentally challanged. Most days I consider certain things a gift... as a child I didn't always feel that way. I was learning to cope and survive in a alien world to me. It wasn't easy but eventually I learned to live inbetween in a way the two worlds.(autistic and neurotypical).

I have struggles because of how I am... however I also wouldn't change how I am all the same though yes it might make life easier in some respects. It would also likely change my personality amoungst other things.

But I can certainly understand why some parents want to help their children and would search for a cure. I've seen and heard of severe cases. In seeing them we sense we are alike but we are also alien to eachother though both autistic. They are perhaps in sensory hell due to sensitivities and unable to learn to translate to the language people typically use. Due to sensory issues and such they might have extreamly challanging behaviours and aren't very functional. They are still in there and like others but unable to figure out how to cope. My son though not autistic had extream behaviours so I know the sorts of thoughts that hit a parents mind including "why??" But over time he improved(all kids change) and if I could cure anything it wouldn't be his mental challange it would be his physical health stuff that could hurt him. He's a sweet boy with a good heart and though not smart by iq standards still has alot to offer the world.(he's been recognized at his school with awards for dealings with others and stuff)

Those that are like me and able to somewhat cope though some of us still might vote to change if we could but there are others like me that wouldn't. We'd be concerned it would change who we are on a deeper level and take away our seeing the world diffrently and our diffrent way of thinking.

What I find truely awful like those ambulance chasers(not just talking lawyers) are the people that go to extreams. They prey on parents who feel desperate and in pain and just plain exhausted. They tell them to try this fad or that or blame this and they can try to make it better with money or with some glowing story that they sell for some large fee for their "method"... Personally I belive those of us that can speak up should for kids as we know what it's like. To try to give families some insight and hope.(alot of docs give doom and gloom) And that if families are given positive coping stradegies and supports it does alot of good and keeps families together, etc.

I'm from btw one of those family that has a history of LD in one side and autistic traits in the other.(my dad didn't speak til 3 for example and I feel he and his father were on the spectrum) I'm the only one from my generation in the family on the spectrum that I am aware of. I do believe in my case it's genetics... however that could also be partially argued as I went into anaphaxic shock 2x as an infant in reaction to two diffrent penicillin drugs and I was 5 months old and not expected to live after one of the reaction.(so it's a case of either could of had enough impact to make me as I am) To me in my dads family eccentricity wasn't a big deal it was a bit more in my moms however.

My abilities from my autism are:

sensitive hearing which is useful for music and a few other things(though a pain when I'm trying to sleep or want quiet)

sensitive smell handy when your baking or for a few other fields(again can be a pain if the smell even if good is strong as it can make me feel ill)

sensitive touch which also has applications ah hem lol though probably some fyos safe ones too(it can be a pain if someone is persistently touching you light or certain clothing textures are rubby/scratchy)

sensitive vision which is good for picking out details and such. (though sometimes contrasts of things or too much visual activity is disorienting or makes you feel kind of ill)

I think more logically supposedly which has it's applications though causes issues with grasping abstract concepts.

Generally certain things viewed as being issues in childhood for autistics can develop into positive things. Depending on how you look at things they can be positive or negative or you can turn them around to being more positive and developing the skills. :)
