There's been several comments relating to marital assets and the division thereof as well as child custody. Those issues are completely separate from alimony and child support, which was what my initial rant was regarding (primarily alimony).
As far as the division of assets goes, all things being equal, I think they should be split down the middle. There are factors which can weigh heavier on one side or another, but generally speaking, if both people were doing their part in the marriage, they're both entitled to a chunk of the assets acquired during the marriage. My future paychecks are not assets acquired during the marriage.
As for child support, I support people taking responsibility for their actions (if you didn't already figure that out). Both people should be equally responsible for the cost of raising the child. If support is paid, the recipient of the support payments should back up their costs with receipts, cost of living invoices, etc. Standards should be set for the financial value of maintaining custody. In short, the amount paid should be 50% of the difference between the cost of living alone vs. the cost of living with and raising the child(ren).
(I've got a feeling that I'm going to catch heck for that last paragraph...)
