My Sony cam does the same. I think the video-chip (dunno the right name in english) scans a litle bit IR just near the visible light-frequencies.
The hot surface of a metal or anything else emitted IR rays in a very low frequency if its tempeature is much more less than 1000°Celsius. But the IR remote control use IR in an higher frequency band.
(just goggle for IR frequencies and the temperature depandencies)
