A question to irish Ufies by Arienadean 2002-12-01 01:01:59
before I ask this question let me state not trying to cause a war of anytype or like. I got taught years ago somethings on the subject but it's been years and the memory is dim so I don't exactly remember all the facts.

Ok the question is what is the dispute between protestants and catholics in ireland? Now reason why I'm asking this is a convo I had with my mom not long ago. I don't know why but was thinking on some cultural stuff tonight regarding my ancestry. My grandfathers never really explained things(well one died before I was born and didn't explain it to my mom the other wouldn't talk on it other than to say it was forbidden). One grandfather was irish american and the other was english born in bristol but his family is decended from the irish branch. I'm forbidden to marry into a specific group according to what was passed on. My moms father was catholic her mom english protestant(united). My dads father and mom were anglican. When my moms mother got married the agreement with my grandfather was the sons would be raised of his faith(catholic) and the girls if hers and pass their faith to their children.(so my uncles and their children are catholic and my aunts and theirs protestant) In my dads family marrying/being involved(other than friendship) with catholics is prohibited.(my grandfather refused to enter a catholic church. So never saw my cousin marry and was very angry when she got married to a catholic) Though not much was explained on it I take it it comes from my irish roots.(unless the scottish also have issues between catholics and protestants as thats the next biggest group in my family ... followed finally by the english)

I've never been stuck in a position that rule would of caused a problem. The lone relationship I had with a catholic he had broken from the church and was into newage native shamen beliefs(much to his moms dismay). The rest were protestant, atheists, or agnostics and usually weren't really practicing their religion if they had one/they weren't devout.(normally I didn't pay too much attention lol)

So anyways I'm curious what the dispute (I'm guessing it's the thing in ireland... and all I really know on that is catholics and protestants are in dispute with eachother but not why) is that caused my grandparents to be weird on involvement with the diffrent beliefs(ie the rules on relationships/involvement based on religion). I don't know what exactly to imput into google to look up info on it. And wondering what would push people to advise generations of their lineage can't have involvement with x group...(I find the family "rules" on such things odd btw and like people of a variety of belief systems)

/me is having sort of a roots moment I guess<shrug>
