A car lead acid is different to the SLA UPSs use. by Tomo 2002-11-30 17:00:01
It is likely that a reasonable-quality UPS will have Hawker SBS batteries fitted.

If you take one apart, the battery will be red and marked Hawker SBS.
If it's black, and marked Hawker Genesis, then you lucky dude, you've got the best SLA in existence running your machine.

A car battery will run a UPS, but they are likely to leak suplhuric acid all over the place, which is not good.
The charger for SLAs is more sophisticated than for car batteries, as you can be really nasty to car batteries without damaging them, while SLAs must be charged carefully.

If you have around £40 to spare, fit an extra Hawker SLA to your UPS.
