I graduated with my CS in 2000, just before the economy tanked. I'm afraid to ask what it's like now, but back then you could more or less pick your job, it seemed like everyone was hiring.
I work for a pretty large company, I get decent pay, great benefits, and I'm not to worried about my job. Plus I telecommute 8 days out of 10.
I've never done any support (except for all the calls from support when they can't handle the problems for our app). I'm very thankful for that because I'm not what you would call a people person.
One of the older programmers I work with told me the company used to require people to work tech support for a year or so before they were allowed to program, but that was scrapped when the competition for programmers got fierce.
Speaking of the older programmers, not a single one of them started off in programming. The closest has an engineering degree (can't remember if it was chemical or electrical), one started off as an accountant. |
