learn COBOL. I know, it's a million years old and it's not as sexy as the latest and greatest... but it's still VERY widely used, it's not going away because it works and works well. The current crop of COBOL programmers is dying and retiring, and there aren't nearly as many in our current generation of programmers... so it's a position that will become more in demand and pay better (not that it pays poorly now) as time goes on. Of course, you'll have to learn to write 10 pages of documentation for every line of code, and you'll feel more like a factory worker than a programmer. And all the PC programmers will make fun of your mainframe all the time. Everything has its bad points. :-)
