I worked as a night auditor in a hotel... which only took a couple of hours of paperwork a night, so in the other 6 hours, I taught myself html, then a little perl, then discovered php and mysql. And built a few websites for myself and friends. After a couple of years there, I applied at a web design shop, was turned down because I didn't know ColdFusion, applied at a bank, got hired on as the #2 web developer there even though they used CF, too... picked that up in a fairly short time.
Now, 2 years later, I'm debating between putting more effort into my own small development/consulting company, accepting a job offer at a video production company as their lead web guy making almost twice as much money, or sticking around at the bank where the most job security is.
Good thing, too. I'm much too impatient for help desk. I'd be in jail for strangling the person the third time they asked me the same stupid question. |
