Those things called Jobs by JohnLynch2002-11-26 03:10:38
  My alternative method by borg389 2002-11-26 06:13:34
was to take a job being the sole person doing programming/tech support/helldesk/network admin for a small company near my home. (well, the boss did some too, but he was a *director*. This meant he got to play with the new toys and new software.)

Paid crap. Job sucked. They used a 4gl language called advanced revelation which no one else on earth used. This meant that my experience counted for little anywhere else. Trapped there for 8 years because I was too chicken to start over.

I got lucky though. Did a cheap dos utility as shareware that a friend ended up needing. It helped get my foot in the door at a consulting company that needed someone who could pick up java fast. (it was still in beta) They had a client that was doing an order entry system in java and didn't have anyone inside that could do it.

My suggestion is to do whatever you can to get a contracting job. I've found that many companies often expect them to be inexperienced. Most of them are.
