Tho I never actually had to sit at a help desk and take calls (cause if I did, I'd have offed myself Long ago), I did my time in hell. I spent a couple years doing private consulting for people and schools, setting up basic networks, doing instruction, and one-on-one tech help. There were some ok people I did work for, but the majority were truly painful. So basically, if ya ain't done time in the trenches, ya shouldn't be in command :).
