It lacked any sense of pace. Sure, characters were doing things, but somehow it failed to actually move on. It took too long over things. It felt drawn out. It was basically an expensive cure for insomnia. It also commits the same sin as the second of the original Star Wars films - not finishing properly. It stops before the end. No, I haven't read the books. Hence the emphasis on as a film, rather than as a film of the books.
