You are correct. There are differences between conversation and debate, the main one being that you can't 'win' a conversation. However conversations can include elements of debate and informal debates within themselves. The dividing line is fluid depending on the participants and the circumstances.

It appears that your friend needs to learn to let things ride sometimes, and you need to learn to avoid his trigger topics when conversing with him.
