A question on debates ... by plblark2006-11-19 12:55:59
  a Germans answer by Argos 2002-11-11 06:24:55
Here in Germany we have to write so called "Erörterungen" at school, something like an essay.
In those we had to discuss a topic, and we had zu argue both sides, the pros and the cons. We were told that only by doing this, we could find the real answer for teh question.

At university I learned that an english essay only put forward arguments for one side, much to my surprise.

My personal opinion is that this german way offers a more likely chance for the best solution. Already in thinking about the question you see for yourself which possibility has the ability of being the best solution.

I often miss that skill when discussing with english speaking people, they seem to have a hard time thinking about arguments against their opinion, because they are simply trained in cutting them down instead of considering them.
