Other than self-interest, what reason is there to do anything? Because I want to help someone else? Not if what happens to him doesn't matter to me. Because I want to help everyone? How can I help everyone else if I don't have anything to begin with? Human beings are motivated by self-interest to good as well as bad. In fact, hurting someone else is seldom based on self-interest. It's based more on a desire to hurt someone else than to help yourself.
