Say I have n units of C14. After umteen years, there will be n/2 units. After another umteen years, it halves again, to n/4 units, and so on. The half-life is not simply half of the whole life.

(Note that knowing the relative amount of C14 that tends to be formed by the relevant precesses compared to normal carbon lets you know how much there was to start with)
