My instructor's favorite phrase regarding a real fight: "Don't stop to admire your work!" His recommendation in any street fight is the first chance you get, run. Chances are good we can run faster and farther than our opponent, especially after taking him or her down once. If we can't, our opponent will probably kill us anyway.

This weekend I saw a man get taken down accidentally with a light tap to the nose. He got hit underneath his nose and going upwards, and it was not intentional. He just sort of ran into it. He was down on the ground, dizzy and nauseous for about fifteen to twenty minutes. One hit. Not even that hard, but well-placed. That really brought home to me the frightening power of what we are learning to do. It's not something to take lightly, or to use in anger.

Of course, someone once said "If you actually have to fight, you have already lost".
