I once heard that the computers which dialed were programmed to hang up if a voice did not answer (or something like that) and were set so that they would only respond if a loud voice answered, if you said "hello" in a rather quiet voice, it would not register and would simply not acknowledge that there was anyone there and so wouldn't go into its speil or notify a human that the phone had been answered. Don't know if its true or not but I've had it work occasionally (not often enough). The trick of course is to be able to think that quickly when you are still mostly asleep. :)
