If I recall, the Legion assigns you a new Identity when you join...you can reclaim your old one when you leave, or go on as a French citizen with your Legionnaire identity after your five years is up. The page Illiad sent mentioned that the Legion won't tell anyone you joined, so you'd hae to tell someone beforehand that you were joining.

As I said...if I ever needed to 'get away' ;>
