Fear implies a threat and nobody likes to be threatened. We hate the criminals with good reason because they make us afraid. The problem comes when your fears are irrational thus your hatreds are also irrational. An example would be if someone hated dogs because they were afraid of being bitten. True, some dogs are vicious and will bite, but the majority of dogs just want to be petted and played with. This canine prejudice is irrational. The same principle applies to bigotry. Some moron hates all Blacks/Jews/Mexicans/Homosexuals due to some irrational fear. Not all of ANY group fits a stereotype (which is a lazy person's way of sorting through people) so those people who belong to the hated group who do not fit the stereotype or even the criteria of what Moron hates about them are tarred with the same brush. In this way bigots cut themselves off from associations and friendships that might bring a lot of value to their lives. Bigots are spiritual paupers.
