You can do a helluva lot worse than RAH. "Stranger" is a bit heavy for a Heinlein newbie, try your friend with "Starship Troopers", "The Moon Is a Harsh Mistress", "The Day After Tomorrow" or "The Door Into Summer". If your friend is younger try "Space Cadet" or "Space Family Stone". If you like Heinlein you will prolly like Eric Frank Russell too. "Wasp" and "Three to Conquer" are IMO two of the best SF books ever written. My $0.02 :o)
