I liked Stranger in a Strange Land, but I found it to be less political and more philosophy/hot sex free love than his earlier works. To me it marked Heinlein's descent into dirty-old-man science fiction, similar to what Piers Anthony did with the Xanth series.
For a first-time Heinlein reader, I would suggest:
- The Moon is a Harsh Mistress
- Methusaleh's Children
- The Puppet Masters
- The Door into Summer
These are probably my favorites of all his novels. They are all sound speculative fiction, with interesting political and social commentary, but with good protagonists and great adventure.
