I think they probably avoided doing that before because it causes more workload for their servers, but if the scientific results may be compromised by cheaters (as well as the competition which draws people in), then they probably will have to move to such a system. It'd be nice if they could come up with a system that Folding@Home and others could use. That way some of the other universities and other organizations could take on some of the bandwidth burden.
