| As one who spent the majority of my life in NC, and with parents from Rural, South Carolina and Backwoods, Alabama, I have very little of a Southern accent. (I've been told I sound like I from either Jersey or Mid-West depending on the day.) However, when a southern word, phrase or pronunciation slips in, or I admit to my love of collards, I am regarded as a hick with sh*t for brains... The media has stereotyped and generalized, etc... Now anyone who lives below the Mason-Dixon is automatically stupid and has a black velvet Jesus hanging in their trailer... |
