But you can get some, or even most, of them precompiled. But even still. I remember compiling the 2.0 series of kernels on a 486DX30 with the absolute minimum number of options back in college. Like an idiot I sat there and watched it for the first 3 hours. It's amazing how much of the X-Windows API you could read while waiting for a kernel recompile in those days. ;-)
