I would suggest taking a look at either SuSE or Red Hat. You should be able to download the ISO images so that you can make your own CDs to install from, assuming you have an OS running on the system at the moment that will allow you to do that :) You could even look at SuSE's LiveUpdate, I think you can actually do the installation across the internet, but if you are on a slow connection, it's going to be doubtful whether that would be practical. I'd offer one of my copies, but they are all pretty old and probably would not support much of your hardware although you could then learn how to update and migrate to the newest version :)
