deployment of 802.11b in a harsh environment recently...

I don't have any spec's on dual-mode access points.
The higher frequency of the .11a system probably means a different antenna.

The deployment i'm familliar with had a small UPS, a Cisco-Aironet 340 Access Point, and a Linksys 4-port 10/100 switch in a water-tight enclosure (they were daisy chaining up to 3 linksys hubs to span longer distances (approximatly 900 feet).
For the longer hops, we used multimode fibre and fibre-to-100Base-T media converters.
