Nowadays, Macs are much better supported than in the past, though still not as fully as PCs. Espcially in OSX, many Windows programs are fully compatible. You can actually write a document in a Mac format and have the option of saving "as Windows document". The OS will change the associations to those compatible with any PC. Try doing that on a Windows machine!
For those programs which you don't have a Mac version, VirtualPC is on it's 7th(?) incarnation and can run most Windows programs in an emulation mode- faster than on a Windows machine in many cases!! Doesn't work well for games, tho...
Mac Mail is Gold! iPictures, iMovie, mp3s, CDR, DVD are all superior on Mac. And the standard for office suites for Mac is ClarisWorks, although MSOffice also comes in a Mac version these days.
