have to tack on that prepositional phrase, don't you know.

If I tell you that the money is hidden to your right while nervously glancing to your left, where are you going to look for the money? Did I lie if the money is actually on your right? On your left? What if my "nervous glancing" was deliberate?

Deliberately misleading someone, while dishonest, isn't lying - not that it matters. Both are sneaky and underhanded. The only reason people want to call it "lying" is because that word carries a stronger emotional charge than "misleading" does.

I prefer to stick to the proper terms, myself. And when I use the wrong term, I hope someone will kindly correct me.
