A Reasonable Assertion (longish) by NOLAWitch2006-11-19 12:55:59

Haven't read what anyone else has typed, so I may be repeating some ideas. It is not point-by-point, it kind of jumps around :)

While it is true that through reproduction, there is a great chance of counter-adaptive genetic mutation. However, how often is there adaptive genetic mutation? Without that, we would not be able to sit here and have this conversation, instead, chances are we'd still be climing around the trees of East Africa, fighting over bits of food and dodging predators. It is probably an unfortunate fact that the more intelligent people who ought to reproduce to improve the species do not because they are too busy with other things (not a negative put down mind you :). Reproduction and working to improve quality of life are not necessarily counter to one another. Although we tend to think you can do one or the other but not both. I think smart, caring people can do both. Sitting in the midwest of the US, I would agree with the notion of mediocrity being the norm. Does this have to be so? I think we need to change the way we think and part of the way we do that is by raising children and passing on not only our genes, but also through who we are, by creating a positive environment in which those children can grow, learn and evolve. Eventually, I suspect, certain behaviours which are positive will enter the genetic mix and be hard-wired into us.

I will agree many people get too caught up in the details of living every day that they forget how to live. Carpe diem and all that. Too many people do not think about tomorrow and where our future generations will be. They are caught up soleley in the here-now. While that is a useful survival trait, it does not bode well for the future. All that said, the decision ultimately rests with you and how you think you want to improve the future, either by raising a child or by working within the system to improve it. As I said before though, from personal observation, I do not think the two are mutually exclusive. Just because you make the choice to have a child, does not mean you have to step into the pattern of being a "mini-van mom" or "family-station wagon father."

There of course is always another way of it. Adoption. It's something I've thought about on occasion although at this point in time, I'm not in a position to act on it. Would be another good way to help raise the bar a bit as it were :) In a lot of these discussions, I never hear that offered up as a viable alternative.

Just my 2 cents :)
