While I agree with your general argument, some of your logic is pretty weak. I hope you forgive the pedantic tone.
The practicality is that soccer moms, while seemingly mediocre entities to yourself, are an accurate representation of our society. Soccer moms drive our economy and our politics- that's why they have been elevated to cliche status. Many of what you consider to be the larger issues in our society are simply dwarfed by the needs of this segment. Why? Because even without a cure for AIDS or a replacement for fossil fuels life goes on (continuation of species and all that).
As far as 'the right job for the right person' argument, besides being totally unobtainable there is something to be said for failure. Life experience shapes us all. A person without the freedom to fail does not have the freedom to truly succeed. Most all successful people will talk about there failures first; not their successes.
Does all this apply to parenting? Absolutely. Children of an alcoholic parent, for example, may grow up to be alcoholics. They also may grow up understanding the disease intimately and become perfect counselors. Children of poor parents more than likely grow up to be poor, but sometimes end up CEOs. And they may be better CEOs if they have had 8 brothers and sisters and have a few kids themselves.
Society benefits from social and biological diversity and adversity- and from soccer moms. Does this mean that every individual has a moral imperative to breed? Not at all. |
