A Reasonable Assertion (longish) by NOLAWitch2006-11-19 12:55:59
Swings and roundabouts! by breezeblock 2006-11-19 12:55:59
Firstly, on a purely biological level it is necessary for a species to reproduce, simply to be a viable species. Add nature to this throwing in genetic curveballs and you get the continuing development of our species. At this point medicine stomps all over our healthy gene pool. It is a safe assumption that every genetic mutation is not going to work for one reason or another. 100 years ago this was not a problem, an infant born with a gross abnormality simply died without reproducing. Nowadays medicine has advanced to such a stage where a defective "product" can be jury-rigged to enable such a defect to live a lower class of life and still be able to reproduce. This pollutes the human gene pool. (Check def.2 of pollutes)by introducing dangerous mutations as "normal".

Secondly, your points about women who have "squandered" decades of their lives bringing up children: I just wonder how much credibility Ms Cady Stanton gave herself simply by *being* an opressed wife and mother? If she were a single firebrand who was long of rhetoric and short on actual experince would she have reached so many? or would she have been dismissed as a "raving lunatic" by the very people she was trying to champion? I wonder!

Lastly, To address your own motivation for not wanting to spawn. I am by no means decrying your decision and I am full of admiration that you are capable of such. It takes an extraordinary amount of intelligence to think things through and go against a primative and natural desire to reproduce if you are a heterosexual. What I would ask is: Are your stated reasons the truth? If you can honestly answer "yes" then you are of course making the correct decision. It is by no means "selfish" to want to achieve something with your life! Goddess knows you are on this planet at this incatation to work. Why should you shoulder an additional burden of anothers life? On the other hand, If you desire a child but the burden of creating and nurturing it has "frightened" you in any way, if you are concerned that a child you bear could possibly suffer by not having the advantages you enjoyed as a child and you have thought of an iron-clad argument to shield you from these fears then I would suggest you think again. As a father my children have fulfilled me in a way I never thought possible. I am lucky in that I am reasonably intelligent and I had parents that prepared me for the gruelling slog that is parenthood. Unfortunately, I have seen what can go wrong when irresponsible people decide to reproduce (see my "whinge" post below). Even if you *do* eventually decide you want kids there are an enormous amount of factors to consider - the primary one being the father.

I sense that after yesterday you feel just a little insecure. At the end of the day, you are you! If you want to talk privately then you have my addy, You know I will listen!
