IIRC, Intel started using DDR in their P4s because it's cheaper and more widely available, thus they were able to drop the prices to reach more consumers. The Rambus memory (wasn't it called RDRAM a year ago?) performs better.

I don't have any stats handy, though, so take that for what it's worth (until someone posts some references).
